Baptism

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to be baptized to get into heaven?
  2. What about John 3:5?

1) Do I have to be baptized to get into heaven? No. We can read in Luke 23:39-43 that Jesus Christ was crucified with two malefactors. These two people were evildoers and not followers of Jesus Christ. One of them believed that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and called Him Lord. This person asked Jesus Christ to remember him when He gets to His kingdom. Jesus Christ told him on this very day that he will be with Him in paradise. That being said, Jesus Christ is our example and we are to follow His teachings. He was baptized, (Mark 1:9-11) so it is a good idea that we also get baptized. But don't believe any one that tells you that you can not get to heaven if your not. It's a good idea but not mandatory.

Luke 23:39-43
V39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on Him, saying, If Thou be Christ, save Thyself and us.
V40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
V41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this Man hath done nothing amiss.
V42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom.
V43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with Me in paradise.
(KJV)

Mark 1:9-11
V9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
V10 And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him:
V11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.

2) What about John 3:5? In John 3:5 we read "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (KJV)

of water and of the Spirit This is the figure of speech Hendiadys or Two for One. It means two words are used, but only one thing is meant. What is meant in this verse is Spiritual water and Jesus Christ is that Spiritual water (John 4:13-14). If we want to go to heaven, we need to have the Spirit of Jesus Christ in us (John 14:6). We do that by asking forgiveness for our sins and asking Jesus Christ to come into our lives.

John 4:13-14
V13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
V14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
(KJV)

John 14:6
V6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.
(KJV)

Also, in Ephesians 2:8-9 we read that we are saved by grace through faith and not by works. Being baptized is considered a work.

Ephesians 2:8-9
V8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
V9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
